General Information
Reflecting its cultural diversity, some 45 languages and dialects are spoken in the state. Bahasa Malaysia is the official language, while English is also widely spoken in cities and increasingly in rural areas. Mandarin, Hokkien and other Chinese dialects are also common. Business hours for government offices are generally 8am to 5pm, with lunch from 12-2pm. Private firms keep similar hours. Commerce runs later, with malls open 10am to 10pm and local shops closing at 7pm. Banks are open 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Most international visitors arrive through Kuching International Airport. Flights are available to major destinations in Sarawak, and many rural destinations are served, albeit with less frequency. Regional connections, including to Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur, are frequent. The temperature is stable, usually staying between 23° and 32°C year-round. Humidity is high, usually over 80% in low-lying areas. The north-east monsoon between November and February brings heavy rain, while the south-west monsoon from June to October is milder.
